When is the best time to see the Geminids in 2027?

The Geminids peak around 20:00 UTC on December 14, 2027, the strongest regular shower of the year (ZHR 150), but this time under a 98% full moon near the northernmost point of its path. Across Europe and North America the moon is up through every dark hour from the night of December 11 to 12 until the peak, so there is no moonless window at all. The Geminid radiant still climbs high (about 72° in Europe around 2:00), and under the full moon a clear sky gives roughly 34 meteors an hour, dark site or not. The first moonless hours come in the evenings after the peak, from the night of December 16 to 17, as the waning moon rises later; Geminid rates are lower by then.

Peak time and rates from the International Meteor Organization's 2027 calendar; the radiant, sun and moon are calculated for each of the 4,176 places on Yozora Atlas. Geometry, not a weather forecast. All 2027 showers: meteor showers 2027.

Middle values of the places in each time zone. "Under the full moon" is the ZHR of 150 times the sine of the radiant's height, for a sky where the faintest stars are magnitude 5 (a full moon lights the sky about as much as a suburb). "Moonless" counts the hours with the sun 18° or more down, the moon below the horizon and the radiant 10° or more up, on the nights of December 15 to 16, 16 to 17, 17 to 18.

Left: meteors an hour at the radiant's highest point on the peak night, under a full-moon sky. Right: places at Bortle 4 or darker, by the dark, moonless hours with the radiant up on the nights of December 15 to 16 to December 17 to 18 together; rates on those nights are lower than at the peak, by an amount the IMO calendar doesn't give.

Why does the full moon matter so much for the 2027 Geminids?

Moonlight hides faint meteors the same way city light does. Away from the moon itself, a full moon brightens the sky to about 18 to 19 mag/arcsec² (Krisciunas and Schaefer 1991), close to a Bortle 7 or 8 sky, so the faintest stars drop to about magnitude 5 even in a national park. With the Geminids' population index of 2.6, that costs about 4.2 times fewer meteors than the same radiant height under a dark, moonless sky. In 2027 the full moon also sits near the northernmost point of its path, so at northern latitudes it stays up all night, as the IMO calendar notes.

How the Geminids numbers are calculated

Peak time, ZHR (150), radiant (right ascension 112°, declination +33°) and population index (r = 2.6) are from the IMO 2027 Meteor Shower Calendar. Each place's clock time comes from the time zone of its nearest GeoNames town. Sun, moon and radiant are worked out in 10-minute steps through the night; full darkness means the sun 18° or more below the horizon, and the moon counts as up when its center is above the horizon. Meteors an hour are the ZHR times the sine of the radiant's height, divided by r for every magnitude the sky falls short of 6.5, using the faintest stars of each Bortle class (Bortle 2001: magnitude 6.5 for classes 1 to 3, 6.3 for class 4, 5.8, 5.5, 5.0, 4.5 and 4.0 for classes 5 to 9). They assume a clear sky, one observer and an open view in every direction; most people count fewer. Under the full moon the faintest stars are taken as magnitude 5 at every place, dark or not. Places where the radiant stays below 10° on the peak night are left out.
